Great spot to train for a super beginner like myself. I dropped in while I'm in town for the week. The instructors all took the time to run basic drills with me to understand the fundamental positions and transitions. Excited to come back here over the next few days while I'm in town!

I have trained with Marcos for quite a few years now. Nobody teaches, instructs, mentors and explains Jiu-Jitsu like Marcos. The school and team is competition orientated so be prepared for tough warm-ups and practices. If you want to compete and win Gold medals at every tournament, this is the school to go to. Nobody else comes close. They may say it, but they are not bring home multiple gold medals form every major tournament. That said, rec players will have a great time training as well. The regular practice is tough but not so tough that you do not wan't to come back. Everyone is friendly, nobody has an ego and Marcos will ensure that everyone trains in a safe, positive environment. Very female friendly. No creeper or prevents here. They are weeded out very quickly. Also no MMA/TapouT Bros. this is a thinking persons school, physical yes, but a thinking persons school. It is very welcoming and inviting. You will soon discover that you have a great training family and can participate in many activities outside the school such as big group dinners to Fuji's sushi, birthday get to gathers at local bars/clubs, UFC fight nights at folks houses and many other social things, and of course LOTS of BJJ. Best school for BJJ in Sacramento period. As soon as I am healed up from a Army Service related injury I will be back on the mats at Yemaso BJJ!!!! Oussss!!!

I've been training at Yemaso for a couple months now, and it has already changed my life--all for the better. It's become the mechanism by which I develop myself physically, spiritually and emotionally. Marcos, owner and professor, is very demanding. But I believe it's because he wants Yemaso to continue being the most competitive jiu jitsu academy in Sacramento, and because there's so much to learn that he has to be efficient with how he teaches. That being said, so many people at the academy, including Marcos, have been incredibly giving with their patience and time. While it is demanding, it's also a very supportive environment. If you're willing to take a little direction, practice humility and put in the work, there's no limit to how much you can grow here. If you're interested in seeing if it's a good fit, drop by a few minutes before a beginner's class and you'll be taken care of.

How does one pick which Jiu Jitsu gym to check out when they are so many to choose from? Yemaso BJJ is a perfect choice! They have an one month free trial, where you can try it out and see if you like it without opening your wallet. My bf has been there for less than a year and he noticed a great improvement in his skills. The team is extremely welcoming and encouraging, and they are willing to help you achieve your next fitness goals. You will have the opportunity to learn from a knowledgable and talented black belt instructor, Marcos! He truly cares about the development of all his students. The gym is open to all skill levels, male and female, kids and adults. They offer morning and evening classes throughout the week. Come and get your 'roll' on! You will be welcome to the BJJ family!

I've visited the Yemaso gyms in Idaho and Reno, but I had never yet been to the HQ location in Sacramento. What a great morning! The only 5 AM class I've ever been to in my life. And it made it super easy to get to work on time without missing breakfast or a shower! The mats were perfectly clean. The bathrooms were perfectly clean. But the technique was the cleanest of all! Crisp, clean, safe, effective technique. We worked standup, which I'm always grateful for. And I got some solid adjustments to both my arm drag and my Russian tie up. Perfect way to start the day. If you're looking for a place to train and think you can't make it work with your schedule----you're wrong! Check them out!

One of the only regrets I have in life, was not doing this sooner in life. Better late than never. I always feel better for going. Professor Torregrosa is a great instructor and wants everyone who comes to succeed. Highly recommended.

Still have questions?

Do You Need to Be in Shape to Train BJJ?

No, most of our members came in after a long hiatus from any type of exercise.  BJJ will get you in shape.

Many people start BJJ specifically because they want to get healthier, leaner, or more active. Classes are designed so beginners can move at a manageable pace while gradually building conditioning, strength, and confidence over time. You do not need to “prepare” your body before starting, training is what gets you in shape.

As you train consistently, you will naturally build endurance, improve mobility, and develop functional strength. Most students are surprised by how quickly everyday activities feel easier, from climbing stairs to carrying groceries or keeping up with work and family responsibilities.

At Yemaso, coaches focus on safe progression and long term development, so students of all fitness levels can train comfortably and sustainably.

I am a Woman: Is BJJ Right for Me?

Yes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is absolutely right for women.

BJJ is based on leverage, technique, and timing rather than size or strength, which makes it especially effective for women of all body types and athletic backgrounds. Many women start with no prior martial arts experience and quickly build confidence, strength, and skill in a supportive environment.

Training improves real world self defense ability, physical fitness, and mental resilience. Women often notice they become leaner, stronger, and more comfortable asserting boundaries both on and off the mats. Just as importantly, BJJ builds confidence through problem solving and controlled resistance, not intimidation.

At Yemaso, women train alongside men in a respectful, safety focused culture. Training partners are expected to be controlled and professional, and coaches actively ensure a positive experience for everyone. Women are an important and valued part of our community.  Additionally, we have launched a Women’s program that is exclusively a female experience!

What do I Bring to my First Class?

For your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, you only need a few simple things.

Bring comfortable athletic clothing, a water bottle, and a positive mindset. If you are attending a gi class and do not yet own a gi, regular workout clothes are fine for your first visit, and the staff can guide you on next steps afterward. For no gi classes, athletic shorts without pockets or zippers and a fitted t shirt or rash guard work well.

Personal hygiene is important in close contact training, so arrive clean with trimmed nails and minimal jewelry. Showing up a few minutes early is also helpful so you can meet the instructor, ask questions, and get settled.

Most importantly, bring an open mind and a willingness to learn. Everything else will be explained once you arrive.

I have Zero Experience in any Sports Including Combat Sports/Martial Arts, can I Train at Yemaso BJJ?

Yes, absolutely.

You do not need any prior experience in sports, combat sports, or martial arts to train at Yemaso Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Many of our students start with no athletic background at all. Classes are structured to teach fundamentals from the ground up in a clear, supportive way.

Coaches focus on proper movement, safety, and understanding rather than expecting you to already know what to do. Training partners are encouraged to be patient and helpful, especially with beginners.

If you are willing to show up, learn, and stay consistent, you will fit in just fine at Yemaso.
